The double-tracked Dacheng Railway, the first high-speed railway in southwest China, was open to traffic at 0:00 July 7. After the completion of double tracking, the journey from Chengdu to Chongqing will be shortened to 2 hours and 46 minutes and from Chengdu to Dazhou to 5 hours and 3 minutes, and travels outbound from Sichuan to central China and east China will take significantly less time, which will promote the construction of the western comprehensive transportation hub.
The double tracking of the Dacheng Railway is one of the key projects in the eleventh five-year plan of China and the railway now forms part of the Shanghai-Wuhan-Chengdu grant railway. The project started in June 2005 with a total investment of 11 billion yuan. Electrification is realized through the whole way of the 368-km track. A second track is newly built along the eastern section, with design speed of 160 km/h; and double-track railway is built along the western section, with design speed of 200 km/h.
The double-tracked Dacheng Railway has two lanes for both directions, and passenger trains and cargo trains have their own way. In addition, the railway will be straighter with fewer curves. Therefore, the capacity for cargo and passenger transportation will be doubled. The whole journey of K9468 from Chengdu to Dazhou will be shortened from 8 hours and 14 minutes to 5 hours and 37 minutes. The new K9506 train will take only 5 hours and 3 minutes. The journey of K9500 from Chengdu to Nanchong will be cut from 5 hours and 5 minutes to 3 hours and 4 minutes. The K9498 train from Chengdu to Nanchong that used to take 4 hours will take 3 hours and 4 minutes only. The K9496/3 train from Chengdu to Wanzhou will take only 7 hours and 59 minutes from the past 9 hours and 6 minutes.
The double-tracked Dacheng Railway connects the double-tracked Xiangyu (Xiangfan to Chongqing) Railway, one of the trunk railways in the national program of “seven verticals and seven horizontals”, which will start operation this year. After that, the Dacheng Railway will link directly to central China and east China and become another express railway outbound from Sichuan. This will considerably alleviate the transportation pressure of the Baocheng (Baoji to Chengdu) Railway, which currently bears over 80% of the outbound passenger and cargo transportation. The Chengdu Railway Bureau revealed yesterday that, with the completion of the double tracking, there will be a major speed elevation for intercity trains between Chengdu and Chongqing. The traveling period of the 3 pairs of “Blue Arrow” multiple unit trains will be shortened to 2 hours and 46 minutes and for the 3 pairs of ordinary double-deck air-conditioned trains, the traveling period will be shortened to 3 hours and 31 minutes.
With the completion of the double tracking, the Chengdu-Dongguan East train, Chengdu-Wuchang East train, Chengdu-Shanghai South train and Chengdu-Wanzhou train resume normal operation today, which had to take the way of Baocheng Raiway or Chengdu-Suining-Chongqing Railway to travel out of Sichuan.
