Cats Leaves City in Ripples of Controversy

The world famous musical drama Cats has proved a huge success in the city, acclaimed as a brilliant pageant and an annual event of cultural exchange.

The drama finishes its performances in Chengdu  after a one-week tour in the city, during which each of its performances was hailed by audiences taking every seat in the auditorium.“It’s a memorable event in my life,”claimed some of the fans,“To see the on-the-spot performance of the world class show.”

Most of the audiences sing praises of the drama and think highly of its plot, settings and the performance of actors. A young girl called Ann said she felt like“becoming one of the cats.”

While some enthusiasts have displayed great fever about the show, others said the performances were lackluster because of the unexciting narration and desultory plot.

But some experts suggested that the lack of interest with the show may attribute to the language barrier and inadequate cultural understanding. In order to understand“Cats”, they said, one should learn the story before going to the scene. As most of the audiences are not fluent in English, it must have been difficult for them to understand the plots well while reading Chinese on the big screen hanging in the auditorium, which they say is a distraction during the time.
