The first Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) degree education in Europe will be offered at the Medicine College of Universite de Montpellier I this September. Chengdu inked an agreement with France about the partnership in the areas of medicine and sanitation on April 2nd. The Chengdu TCM circle will offer professional support to this “European First.” It was announced that to open TCM courses in Europe not only furthers the cooperation in the realm of medicine and sanitation between Chengdu and Montpellier, but also marks that Chengdu TCM will go to the international market.
TCM Clinic to be open in France
According to the agreement, a two-year degree education on TCM will be provided at the Medicine College of Universite de Montpellier I. All relevant courses will be designed jointly by both French and Chengdu sides. Two local reputed TCM doctors will be dispatched to Montpellier to conduct a three-month academic exchange each year. Meanwhile, a TCM clinic will be set up in the area of Universite de Montpellier I. During the exchange period, the two local doctors will treat French patients at the clinic every week. Besides, as an instructional hospital, the Chengdu Municipal Hospital of Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine (MHTCWM) will train interns from the Medicine College of Universite de Montpellier I while graduates from the university will be granted diplomas on TCM education. As to the Medicine College of Universite de Montpellier I, experts will be sent to Chengdu for academic exchange, according to the demand of MHTCWM. Both the TCM clinic and the TCM professional courses are to be operational this September, said Zhang Yi, principal of MHTCWM.
All-round Mutual Cooperation
In line with the agreement, in the next two years, the French side will offer a rewardful position to a Chinese doctor or researcher who has registered in the Medicine College of Universite de Montpellier I, for special training on test-tube baby technique. Moreover, the agreement clarified the long-term cooperation scope between Chengdu and Montpellier. The further cooperation on hospital management, AIDS, dermatology, surgery, psychology between both sides is expected. French will offer technical and expert support for further mutual cooperation.

Chengdu and Montpellier is the first pair of Sino-French sister cities with a friendly relationship of over 26 years. Last October, Zeng Wanming, deputy mayor of Chengdu, was invited to visit Montpellier and inked a framework agreement on e cooperation of medicine and sanitation between the two cities.
